1999 DISK/TREND Report

The disk drive market changes every year,
and the same can be said about the DISK/TREND Report

Basic business applications have always provided the core of the market for disk drives, but new applications continually appear. 1999 was a banner year for new disk drive applications, including consumer video recording devices, lower and lower bottom tiers for personal computers, incursions into traditional tape markets by high capacity hybrid technology disk drives, and new mobile applications made possible by miniaturized disk drives.

As usual, the DISK/TREND Report changed to reflect the industry's evolving product mix. Some product group capacity ranges were revised upward again for hard disk drives. Optical and other removable disk drives were combined into a single report (which will no longer include flash memories or optical libraries), for the convenience of users.

No rumors, no hunches.
All data direct from the source.

No shortcuts were taken. DISK/TREND conducted extensive field research on a worldwide basis to record changes in the disk drive industry's structure and products. All DISK/TREND Reports include authoritative data on products, shipments, technology and market trends, plus detailed information on manufacturers throughout the world. A highly accurate shipment history for the most recent calendar year is the basis for all 1999 DISK/TREND Report forecasts, which extend through 2002.

Users like the way the reports are organized.

All products are organized into logical groups, with statistical tables broken down into subgroups, as appropriate. The key marketing and technical trends that impact each product group are analyzed, and specifications for all products currently in production are listed. The underlying causes of significant industry trends are identified in the analysis section of each DISK/TREND product group and in a comprehensive summary.

All manufacturers are described, and DISK/TREND shipment and revenue data clearly differentiate between products shipped by manufacturers headquartered in the United States and those based in other countries, as well as U.S. vs. non-U.S. shipment destinations. Competitive market shares in each product group are provided for noncaptive products shipped in significant quantities.

All markets are examined, and data is segmented by market channel, with a clear distinction between products produced on a captive basis by vertically integrated system manufacturers, sales in plug compatible and distribution markets, and sales direct to OEMs and system integrators. Analysis covers the impact of changing computer system requirements, expected inroads by alternative data storage methods, emerging technology innovations, and new product configurations.
